village is located at the foot of the white mountains in a ravine
which is the source of the Keritis river. Sheer, stone houses are
shadowed by maple trees and brooks gurgling create a tranquil
environment for the heat-struck visitor. The two Byzantine
churches of the village reward the visitor with 14th century

AGIA
LAKE
|
|
|
The
word "AGIA" comes from the arabic "AIA"
meaning water. The lake at AGIA gives a different dimension to its
immediate area and to the village which carries its name. The lake
creates a microcosm unique to the island, with rare flora and
fauna that are officially protected as a national sanctuary. The
area rose to its peak during Byzantine times (8th century) and
became famous again because of the decisive battles fought there
during the second World War. |

MALEME
BATTLEFIELD
|
|
|
The
village of Maleme lends its name to the nearby airstrip and WW2
battlefield. This is the place where local farmers, together with
a handful of NewZealanders, Australians and British resisted
against the most powerful airborne force of the second world war,
and made the battle of Crete epic. The visit to the commanding
hill south of the airstrip where the German war cemetery is
located offers commanding vistas of the battlefield, and the
thousands of gravestones an indication of how fierce the battle
must have been. |
| Every
Sunday 17.30 |
SKINES
|
|
|
A
ride by the riverside (Keritis River) will take us to Alikianos
village where the remains of the Da Moli tower still echo the
verses of the famous Zampelios Rhapsody Cretan Wedding. A visit to
St. George church and the venetian bridge will take us to the
other side of the river and to Skines village, a traditional
farming village lost within the orange groves. This is where the
